2014 Summer Clinical Ethics Internship/ MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC

The Center for Ethics at MedStar Washington Hospital Center (WHC) invites applications for the summer 2014 Clinical Ethics Internship. MedStar Washington Hospital Center is the largest private hospital in the nation’s capital and is a Level I trauma center. The Center for Ethics at WHC provides 24-7 ethics consultation services, administers a 30 member multidisciplinary Bioethics committee and provides ethics training courses to health care practitioners at WHC and practitioners from around the world.

The Ethics Intern will have the opportunity to work closely with the Center’s multidisciplinary staff on topics in clinical ethics, research and ethics related hospital policy. These topics include, but are not limited to issues in advance care planning, the ethical issues at the end of life, decision making for patients, maternal/fetal conflicts, informed consent/refusal, and privacy and confidentiality. The intern will work closely with Center faculty on projects of mutual interest or pre-established projects. Also, the intern will be able to observe clinical ethics consultation and attend rounds in our 7 intensive care units and other medical specialties. The internship begins June 2nd and ends August 1st.


Applicants should be rising 3rd or 4th year undergraduates with course work or related experience in medical ethics, healthcare ethics or bioethics. They should have an interest in clinical ethics, and career goals to which the study of clinical ethics applies. Applicants should demonstrate interest in clinical ethics through coursework, independent study, scholarship or clinical experience. Also, applicants must have strong writing, communication and interpersonal skills.

Applicants must submit: a letter of intent outlining his/her interest in the field of clinical ethics, a writing sample such as a paper written for a course, a letter of recommendation from a former professor/mentor or a current transcript.
