The Bioethics of Surrogacy: Looking Back and Ahead

November 11 @ 5:00 pm

This webinar is the third event in our series, “Frontiers in the Ethics of Human Reproduction.”

Surrogacy is helping growing numbers of people fulfill their dream of becoming parents. But throughout its history, from “Baby M” in the 1980s to various cases in the news today, it has raised ethical and legal questions. How have those questions changed as surrogacy has evolved? What lessons can we learn to best support and protect prospective parents and children, and surrogates?

This webinar will be presented with Retro Report, an award-winning independent, nonprofit news organization that produces short documentaries that bring historical perspective to current issues for educators, students, and the public. Join us for a timely discussion with two legal/bioethics scholars and an educator with a surrogacy agency who has been a surrogate.

Panelists:

Judith Daar, JD, is dean of Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University. She is the former chair of the Ethics Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and is an expert on legal issues concerning emerging technologies in family formation.

She is the author of Scarlet A: The Ethics, Law, and Politics of Ordinary Abortion (Oxford, 2018) and is a member of the ethics committee of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
