End-of-Year Appeal 2026

Dear friend,

•When a chatbot says it cares about you, does it matter that it doesn’t?

•Should terminally ill patients have more control over how their story ends?

•How should we grapple with the re-emergence of preventable diseases?

The Hastings Center for Bioethics infuses public discourse with ethics and values to address such questions. Relying on conversations across differences, our impact involves both deeper understanding of key issues and promoting positive change in society. We cannot do this timely work without the support of donors like YOU!

Against the backdrop of cuts to federal grant funding, heightened polarization, rampant misinformation, and widespread distrust, we’re amplifying our impact and securing our position as a trusted—and independent—voice in bioethics:

  • This year we released our first-ever Impact Report, featuring prescient work on health AI; aging and dementia; the first pig kidney transplant trials; and global bioethics, equity, and war. From essays in Hastings Bioethics Forum to an appearance on 60 Minutes, our outreach brings clarity to urgent ethical threats confronting society.
  • Our leading scholarship focuses on emerging and evolving technologies, including health AI, reproductive technology, and synthetic life; how to ethically generate, evaluate, and apply scientific evidence; healthy aging; and population health
  • We’re also expanding service to the global bioethics community through our Pathways Programs for students and early-career scholars, engagement of Hastings Center Fellows, promotion of ethical leadership in health, and publication of our peer-reviewed journals.

While advancing all this work and more, our commitment to justice, equity, inclusion, integrity, and intellectual rigor has not wavered. It’s only grown.
