Nominate Physicians for Outstanding End-of-Life Care
Nominations are open for awards that recognize six physicians for providing outstanding care to patients nearing the end of life. The awards are given by The Hastings Center and the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation. Nomination deadline: January 31, 2024.
The Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Physician Awards
These awards, given since 2010, recognize five exemplary physicians: one senior physician, one in mid-career, and three early-career physicians. The awards consist of $25,000 each for the senior and mid-career physicians and $15,000 each for the early-career physicians.
Dr. Richard Payne Palliative Care Leadership Award
This $25,000 award honors a physician who demonstrates strong leadership in palliative care for underserved populations.

The physician awards selection committee is: Kathleen Foley, MD, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; Zara Cooper, MD, MSc, Center for Geriatric Surgery and Public Health, Brigham and Women’s Hospital; Anthony N. Galanos, MD, Duke University School of Medicine; Diane Meier, MD, Mt. Sinai Hospital and Center to Advance Palliative Care; and Rodney O. Tucker, MD, University of Alabama Center for Palliative and Supportive Care
The Hastings Center is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research institute that addresses social and ethical issues in health care, science, and technology.
The Cunniff-Dixon Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, was created in 2005 in memory of Carley Cunniff and in recognition of her physician, Dr. Peter S. Dixon, who enabled her to die a peaceful death at home with her family and loved ones. The mission of this Foundation is to enrich the physician-patient relationship near the end of life through education, collaboration, and recognition. A defining characteristic of the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation is that it is not aligned with any outside organizations and has no commercial affiliations. Donations come from those solely interested and committed to its mission.
