MEDIA ADVISORY: 07.26.12 Bioethicist Tom Murray available to discuss doping, fairness, and other ethical issues in sport as Olympics approach

(Garrison, NY) With the Olympics beginning on July 27, attention is focused on the world’s top athletes, as well as ethical issues surrounding the use of performance-enhancing drugs and other technologies. Thomas H. Murray, senior research scholar and President Emeritus of The Hastings Center and a leading expert on ethical questions in sport, is available to discuss the ethical foundation for anti-doping policies in sport and questions around uses of technology in sport competitions, including:

* gene doping and other genetic means of enhancing sports performance

* anti-doping efforts at this year’s Olympics – their strengths and limitations

* controversy over permitting Oscar Pistorius, the South African track athlete who runs with carbon fiber prostheses, to compete in the  London Games

Murray, who serves as Chair of the Ethical Issues Review Panel for the World Anti-Doping Agency, is writing a book on fairness in sport with the working title, Why We Play.
