Summer Bioethics Program for Underrepresented Undergraduates
June 12-16, 2023
About the Program
The Hastings Center Summer Bioethics Program for Underrepresented Undergraduates is a five-day live online program for undergraduate students from groups that are underrepresented in bioethics. These groups include and are not limited to communities of color, Indigenous communities, rural residents, and students with disabilities. This program is part of The Hastings Center’s efforts to build a more inclusive bioethics community.
We will select 20 applicants for the 2023 program. Students who complete all program requirements, including daily attendance, will receive a stipend of $500. Participants will engage with distinguished scholars from around the country and learn about theoretical and applied issues in bioethics. Participants will develop skills in clarifying, explaining and justifying their views on topics in bioethics, and in listening with respect to divergent views.
Sessions include lectures, group discussions, and small group exercises. To meet the students and instructors from last year’s session, visit the program website. Students must be able and willing to commit to a five-day, participatory online program from Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16, starting at 11 am and ending at 5 pm ET.
Eligibility
Students must be enrolled as undergraduates at the time of application in accredited colleges or universities in the United States (graduating seniors are eligible to apply); come from an underrepresented group; and be in good academic standing. Bioethics experience is not required; interest in bioethics is.
Students who are accepted and enroll in the program commit to:
- Attend all sessions daily, preferably with camera turned on
- Complete readings and other assignments on time
- Contribute to discussion sessions and small group exercises
