Fear and Doping in Las Vegas
Hastings President Emeritus Thomas Murray appeared on ESPN discussing the ethics of the Enhanced Games, the first competition where athletes were encouraged to use performance-enhancing drugs in pursuit of world records and millions in prize money. “I think the Enhanced Games will be interesting as a case study of the things people will do to make money,” said Murray, who played a major role in developing the U.S. Olympic Committee’s anti-doping policy and sees likely danger that romanticizing performance-enhancing drugs poses to young athletes. “I think it will tell us nothing of great interest about the nature of or the meaning of sport.” Watch the episode.
