The Hastings Center for Bioethics invites applications for the 2026-2027 cohort of Sadler Scholars from advanced doctoral students in the United States in any field with a career focus on scholarly research and education in one of these areas:

  • AI ethics in medical/health care or social care
  • ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of human genomics
  • health care ethics and/or health humanities

During their cohort year, Sadler Scholars participate in small group workshops, one-on-one consultations with program mentors, and other opportunities tailored to their goals and interests. Each Sadler Scholar presents a work-in-progress talk on their dissertation or other research during their cohort year for feedback from Hastings Center scholars and editors. Following the cohort year, Sadler Scholars have ongoing access to mentor consultations and to online events hosted by The Hastings Center, and may be invited to join Hastings Center research work groups.

All Sadler Scholars programming is offered remotely and no travel is required. Sadler Scholars receive a stipend of $500 from The Hastings Center through the Blair and Georgia Sadler Fund for Socially Just Health Policy.

Through The Hastings Center’s partnership with the Center for ELSI Resources and Analysis (CERA), Sadler Scholars with ELSI-focused research interests also become CERA Fellows, with additional opportunities for mentoring and collaboration with ELSI scholars.
