Research Scholar

Athmeya Jayaram works at the intersection of political theory and technology ethics, particularly on how we can make legitimate and fair decisions on the design and use of AI and gene editing technologies.

Prior to joining The Hastings Center, he was a Hecht-Levi Fellow on Ethics and Infectious Disease, appointed jointly at the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University and the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities at the University of Oxford. Jayaram has also been a postdoctoral scholar at the Institute for Practical Ethics at University of California, San Diego, where he worked on the ethics of “gene drive” mosquitoes and automated decision systems. He has published in the Journal of Moral Philosophy, Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy, and Bioethics, among others. Jayaram earned a PhD in political theory from University of California, Berkeley, an MA in bioethics from New York University, and a BA in philosophy from Amherst College.
