SUMMARY:Polygenic Embryo Screening: The Promise and Perils of Selecting Our Children’s Traits
DESCRIPTION:Recent advances in genetic screening have made the science fiction allure of choosing our children’s traits ever more possible. Many parents-to-be already screen human embryos derived from in vitro fertilization (IVF) to avoid passing along harmful genetic diseases. However\, with the falling cost of genetic sequencing\, along with increased understanding of the genetic basis of many characteristics\, fertility clinics are starting to offer couples additional technologies. These allow prospective parents to screen embryos before implantation in the womb\, to see how likely each one is to develop conditions or traits that depend on many genes\, such as schizophrenia\, Crohn’s disease\, and even high IQs. Some of these applications are quite controversial. \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Vardit Ravitsky\, host Dr. Insoo Hyun\, and instructor Lauren Walsh in this interactive webinar as they wade through the thicket of the promises and perils of polygenic embryo screening. \n\n\n\nCosponsored by Museum of Science\, Boston and Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence for Safer Care: Opportunities and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Hastings Center CEO Vardit Ravitsky will participate in The 2024 Bennathan Patient Safety Lecture. \n\n\n\nThe application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is expanding exponentially and is poised to make substantive and disruptive changes to the healthcare landscape. There is a growing body of evidence demonstrating the positive impact that AI is having on healthcare delivery (e.g.\, reducing burden on doctors and nurses\, aiding clinical decision support\, and lessening human resources challenges). Simultaneously\, the application of AI “at the bedside” raises important concerns and questions among patients\, their families\, and clinicians alike\, including: \n\n\n\n\nthe applicability/efficacy of AI in the context of complex medical decision-making;\n\n\n\nbio-ethical concerns associated with AI (e.g.\, data security\, autonomy\, accountability\, privacy);\n\n\n\nAI’s influence on health equity (e.g.\, potential for contributing to bias); and\n\n\n\npatients’ perceptions of its use in their care (e.g.\, trust\, transparency).\n\n\n\n\nThe 2024 Bennathan Patient Safety Lecture will serve as an interdisciplinary forum to address these issues.

SUMMARY:In Science We Trust?
DESCRIPTION:There’s a growing worldwide trend of distrust in science and medicine—a trend thrown into sharp relief by the Covid-19 pandemic and vaccination campaigns. How did we get here and what can we do about it? \n\n\n\nWatch our discussion of the pivotal issue of trust in science. How has the past influenced the distrust we’re seeing today? What is in store for the future? SUMMARY:Reflections on the Idea of Social and Behavioral Genetics
DESCRIPTION:Basic research is ongoing into the genomics of complex human behaviors and social outcomes\, from eating and sexual behaviors to “subjective sense of well-being” and “educational attainment.”  Although the people doing this research may work hard to articulate their benevolent intentions as well as seeking to conduct rigorous\, reproducible\, ethical research\, they do so against the history of pseudoscience\, eugenics\, and scientific racism. In this seminar\, our expert panel will share insights regarding the potential risks and benefits of such research: Will investigations of associations between genetic differences and observed differences in behaviors and social outcomes exacerbate—or help to undermine—genetic determinism? How can behavioral and social genomics research community and the neurodiversity and disability justice movements learn from each other? Can the polygenic scores created by behavioral and social geneticists be of any real use to improve clinical or social science research? To what extent\, if any\, is behavioral and social genetics research relevant to discussions of using CRISPR to enhance moral and cognitive behavior? To explore these questions\, we are delighted to be joined by: \n\n\n\n\nDr Daphne Martschenko (Stanford University Center for Biomedical Ethics)\n\n\n\nDr. Erik Parens (The Hastings Center)\n\n\n\nProf. Kathryn Paige Harden (University of Texas at Austin)\n\n\n\n\n If you are interested in joining\, please send an email to oliver.feeney@uni-tuebingen.de \n\n\n\nModerated by: Dr Oliver Feeney\, Ethics of Genome Editing Research Unit\, Institute of Ethics and History of Medicine\, University of Tübingen\, Germany.
