PRESS RELEASE 4-2-2018: Application Deadline Approaching: The Hastings Center Awards for Excellence in Journalism on Ethics and Reprogenetics

Submit an article to The Hastings Center Awards for Excellence in Journalism on Ethics and Reprogenetics. Three prizes will be given: a first prize of $6,000 and two runners-up of $3,000 each.

We live in an era in which great advances are occurring at the intersection of assisted reproduction technologies and genetics, often called reprogenetics. These advances include preimplantation genetic diagnosis, prenatal genetic testing, and gene editing. They hold great promise for improving human health and enhancing reproductive control. But they also demand careful thought and wise policies. No technology is neutral, and reprogenetic technologies have many social and ethical implications worthy of careful examination.

The Hastings Center Awards for Excellence in Journalism on Ethics and Reprogenetics will recognize journalism that not only explains the science and concerns about safety and efficacy, but also engages broader philosophical questions. How can reprogenetic technologies be deployed to promote human well-being? What impact might they have on relationships between parents and children, on cultural attitudes toward difference and disability, and on our obligations to one another? What are the consequences of reprogenetic technologies for human flourishing? How can we best ensure that we use our newfound powers wisely?

Applications are open through May 31, 2018.

These journalism awards are part of The Hastings Center’s project on gene editing and human flourishing. For more information and to submit an article, click here.
