The Ethics of Improving Health Care Quality & Safety

Principal Investigators: Mary Ann Baily and Bruce Jennings

Funder: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality

The investigators studied the ethical issues raised by the use of quality improvement (QI) methods in health care, in order to build a consensus on how to manage QI activities so that valuable improvements can be achieved while at the same time patients affected by QI activities are adequately protected from harm. The project produced a Hastings Center Report special report, The Ethics of Using QI Methods to Improve Health Care Quality and Safety.
