Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG™)

Hastings Investigator: Karen Maschke

Funder: National Cancer Institute under a contract with Booz Allen Hamilton, the Project Management Office for the caBIG™ program

The need to accelerate the translation of basic research discoveries into new clinical therapies demands that the channels of communication, data exchange, and collaboration be significantly expanded among cancer centers. The National Cancer Institute introduced the caBIG™ initiative to address these issues in the cancer research community. The aim of this project was to facilitate data sharing among caBIG™ participants by addressing legal, regulatory, policy, proprietary, and contractual barriers to data exchange. The project produced recommendations for policies, procedures, and best practices, and provided education and outreach to caBIG™ participants, their institutional review boards, and their technology transfer offices.
