Genetic Literacy

January 2002 - April 2003

Working with the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and its Project on Genetic Literacy, The Hastings Center is preparing a background paper that will explore the knowledge and attitudes of Americans concerning the science of genetics, its medical applications, and its social implications. Our study will also address the concerns of ethnic and minority groups and their special educational needs regarding genetics. It will offer recommendations for how best to approach education for genetic literacy, from the point of view of what individuals need to know both as consumers of genetic science and technology, and as democratic citizens who should have a voice in the policy and regulatory process governing genetic research and development.
