HIV/AIDS in East Africa
Addressing Legal, Ethical & Human Rights Challenges

September 2001 - December 2003

Africa is the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, where over 25 million people are currently infected with the virus. The Hastings Center has initiated a project designed to ensure that health care providers take into account ethical, legal, and human rights issues alongside clinical and behavioral responses to the epidemic. This two-year project focuses on the impact of the epidemic on doctors, nurses, and other clinicians in East Africa. In partnership with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), based in Nairobi, the project seeks to establish national and regional pilot forums for dialogue and education among medical practitioners; develop informational materials on the major ethical, legal, and human rights challenges faced by health care workers; and crafting problem-solving tools to assist health care workers, physician associations, patients, policy makers, legislators, and the general public to deal with those challenges.
