President
and Chief Executive Officer
The Hastings Center
Garrison, New York
The Hastings Center, a leading
independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit research institution dedicated to
bioethics and the public interest, invites applications and nominations for its
President and Chief Executive Officer.
The
Hastings Center was founded in 1969. The Center addresses fundamental ethical issues in health, medicine and the
sciences as they affect the well-being of individuals, communities, and
societies. Bioethics as a field
matured at Hastings, the world’s first bioethics research institution. Since that time the Center has had a profound
influence on scholarship, clinical education and standards, and public policy
in the areas of its concern. The Center
is home to a group of leading bioethics scholars, and draws on a world-wide
network of experts, including an elected association of scholars, researchers,
and other thought leaders influential in bioethics called Hastings Center Fellows. Research is
carried out in many ways, including interdisciplinary teams that convene to
frame and examine issues that inform professional practice, public
conversation, and social policy.
Located
in Garrison, New York, the Center is situated on the Hudson River across from West
Point, 80 minutes from New York City.
The search for a new
President provides an opportunity to bring new ideas to a well-led, highly
respected, and successful institution. The President of the Hastings Center will be a creative leader with the
ability to persuade by example and intellect. The new President will require and exercise a deep and broad
understanding of the challenges raised by emerging biotechnologies and changes
in healthcare decision-making. He or she will encourage the use of innovative
communication, including web-based media, to amplify the work and reach of the
Center. A seasoned organizational
leader, she or he will also require outstanding fundraising energy and ability.
The successful candidate may come from a college or university, from a
