Karen Maschke, PhD

Karen Maschke, PhD, is Associate for Ethics and Science Policy and editor
of the Center's journal IRB: Ethics & Human
Research. She has training in political science and bioethics.
From 1985 to 1996, she taught political science courses on law-related and
criminal justice topics at Oakland University in Michigan and at the University
of Georgia.
From 1999-2000 she was the Clinical Bioethics Fellow in the Department of Bioethics at the Cleveland Clinic, where she joined departmental staff members in responding to requests by clinicians and families for ethics consultations. In addition to her clinical activities, she conducted bioethics education sessions for residents, attending physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. Among other issues, she has written on payment to pediatric research subjects and their parents or guardians, proxy consent for research with decisionally impaired individuals, and respective policies in the United States and the United Kingdom that govern research with humans.
