Gregory E. Kaebnick, PhD
Editor, Hastings Center Report
Associate for Philosophical Studies

Gregory Kaebnick Gregory E. Kaebnick is editor of the Hastings Center Report and associate for philosophical studies on the Center's research staff. He codirects the project Genetic Ties and the Future of the Family. Mr. Kaebnick is interested in questions about the kinds of values that figure in thinking about new biotechnology, and particularly on the way people think about nature and human nature when evaluating new biotechnologies. This work has evolved out of earlier, philosophical work on the nature and status of moral values and the structure of moral deliberation--on the role of principles and rules in making moral judgments, for example.

The converse of the question about what values are significant for thinking about new biotechnology is whether and how new biotechnology and scientific advances might in turn lead to changes in the concepts involved in morality. In Genetic Ties and the Future of the Family, Mr. Kaebnick explored the ramifications of genetic paternity testing for the parent-child relationship. In the recently concluded Crafting Tools for Public Conversation about Behavioral Genetics, he addressed the implications of behavioral genetics for human freedom.

Mr. Kaebnick received his PhD (1998) and MS (1994) in philosophy from the University of Minnesota and his BA in religion from Swarthmore College (1986).
