The Hastings Center Joins Partnership on AI

With the power of artificial intelligence, machines can perform increasingly complex tasks, such as speech, learning, planning, and problem-solving. While AI technologies may bring great value to individuals and society, many are concerned about their intended and unintended effects.

To help shape the wise use of AI, The Hastings Center has joined the Partnership on AI, a nonprofit organization that will study and formulate best practices in the development, testing, and use of these technologies. The Partnership on AI was cofounded by Amazon, Apple, Google/DeepMind, Facebook, IBM and Microsoft.

“The Hastings Center brings its expertise in the governance of AI and other technologies, as well as research ethics, medical ethics, and the ethics of emerging technologies to the partnership,” says Hastings Center senior advisor Wendell Wallach, who leads a Hastings Center project on the control and responsible  innovation in the development of autonomous machines. The Hastings Center hosted a public symposium on AI last year, “Can We Keep Artificial Intelligence Safe, Controllable, and Beneficial?” The event can be viewed here.
