About the Centre for Applied Ethics:
The W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics is an interdisciplinary research unit within the College for Interdisciplinary Studies, at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. The mission of the Centre is to advance the research agenda of applied ethics, conceived as the application of normative theory and social science to core issues in science and technology ethics and policy, organizational ethics, animal welfare, the environment, and research ethics.

Position Description:
The University of British Columbia is seeking applications for an assistant professor, limited term, to be based in the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied. Candidates must be creative and productive researchers committed to excellence in teaching and training of students and other highly qualified personnel. The incumbent is expected to extend current public engagement related to genomics and biotechnology, and to develop research projects that will contribute to the design and evaluation of methods of developing informed, deliberative public input into science and technology policy. Primary teaching will be at the graduate level, but will involve undergraduate students in research and seminars. The appointment will be for one year, renewable, at the rank of Assistant Professor, commensurate with background and experience.

The incumbent will co-lead a research group and related graduate seminar series based on a high quality, innovative and externally funded research program focused on evaluation of public engagement, including methods based on deliberative democracy and on topics across human health, food systems and environment. Areas of specialization could include fisheries, human genomics, and environmental applications of genomics. The UBC strategic research plan has identified interdisciplinary research on issues related to community and policy based concerns as an important UBC research mission. UBC has a very strong Canadian effort in this area with a core group of internationally recognized researchers at the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics (http://www.ethics.ubc.ca/).

Position Requirements:
A PhD, post-doctoral training or equivalent experience/background in qualitative and quantitative methods, and a strong interest to apply this expertise to public engagement. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other teams on the project “Building a GE3LS Architecture” (http://gels.ethics.ubc.ca/) as well as colleagues and students at the Centre and on genome science projects associated with Genome BC and Genome Canada.
