The Hastings Center Intern Program provides undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to work at The Hastings Center, either on a particular project or project-in-development or in a particular Hastings Center department such as Library, Editorial, or Development. For summer internships (May–August), applications should be received before March 1st. At all other times, prospective interns should apply at least 4 weeks before they would anticipate beginning the internship.
Applicants should send (email is encouraged) or fax a letter of application indicating why they wish to intern at the Center, along with a resume or curriculum vitae, academic transcript, writing sample, and the names of two references to: visitors@thehastingscenter.org.
The Center is generally unable to compensate interns for their time, travel, or living expenses and most applicants should plan to fully cover all their own expenses (applicants are encouraged to explore any internship funding opportunities offered by their institutions).
The Emily Murray Student Fellowship Award
The Emily Murray Student Fellowship Award offers select
undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue independent research in the
field of bioethics at The Hastings Center for a period of two to four weeks.
Visiting student scholars will research and write a portion of their
independent scholarly project while in residence at The Hastings Center.
Student scholars will be expected to deliver a lunchtime presentation of their
work to Hastings Center scholars and staff and will have the opportunity to
discuss their project individually with the Center’s research scholars upon
availability. Student scholars will have access to the Robert S. Morison
Library and will be expected to attend lectures and presentations given by other
visitors and staff.
The Hastings Center seeks undergraduate applicants in their
junior or senior year with strong academic credentials and the ability to work
independently. To apply, students must be pursuing an independent scholarly
project, such as a senior honors thesis or independent study, in conjunction
with a faculty member at their college or university. Applicants must be
majoring in or have a strong demonstrated interest in the fields of philosophy
or religion. Successful applicants will reside in the Hastings Center visitors’
apartment and will receive a $750 stipend through the Emily Murray Fund.
To apply, students must submit a cover letter explaining
their academic background and goals as well as their preferred dates for the
residence; a proposal of no more than 500 words describing both their project
(the thesis or independent study) and what they intend to accomplish while in
residence at The Hastings Center; a resume or curriculum vitae; and the name, email address and phone number of the
faculty advisor to the independent project. Applications for summer residence
are due by April 1, 2012. Applications for residence at other times of the year
will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Applications should be submitted online.
