Media Advisory 11-10-14: Live Webcast of LGBT Health and Human Rights Symposium

Cultural attitudes toward same-sex marriage are changing dramatically, but LGBT people still experience staggering health burdens and human rights violations. What are the best ways to close the gap in health disparities for LGBT people? Have the most cogent arguments been advanced?

These are among the questions that will be discussed at LGBT Health and Human Rights: New Ideas for Dynamic Times, a symposium to be webcast live on Monday, November 17, from 6 – 7:30 pm. Access the webcast at: https://fora.tv/event/lgbt_health_and_human_rights_new_ideas_for_dynamic_times/watchlive?evt=login-fbbasic

Speakers are award-winning author Andrew Solomon and psychiatrist-bioethicist Tia Powell, of Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. A roundtable conversation will follow with a distinguished panel of respondents:

  • Ram Raju, MD, president and CEO, New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation
  • Jamie Lindemann Nelson, PhD, philosopher, Michigan State University
  • Robert Espinoza, MPA, senior director of public policy and communications, SAGE

The discussion will be moderated by Mildred Z. Solomon, EdD, president, The Hastings Center

The event is presented by The Hastings Center and the Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics. It builds on the recent release of LGBT Bioethics: Visibility, Disparities, and Dialogue, a groundbreaking special report co-edited by Tia Powell and Mary Beth Foglia and published as a supplement to the September-October 2014 Hastings Center Report, a leading bioethics journal.

The webcast will be archived on The Hastings Center’s website.
