Reprint Permissions

The Hastings Center frequently receives requests for permission to reprint or otherwise reproduce articles that have appeared in the Hastings Center Report or IRB: Ethics & Human Research.

All permission requests should be sent to the editorial department by email (editorial@thehastingscenter.org) or by fax (845-424-4931). The request must include a full citation of the article, including author(s), journal title, year of publication, volume, and issue number. It must also describe exactly how the article is to be used.

In general, the following guidelines apply:

  • Requests to reproduce articles for nonprofit, educational use. Permission is necessary from the Center as copyright holder, but no fee is charged.
  • Requests to reprint articles or excerpts from articles in a book that will be commercially available. Permission of both the Center, as copyright holder, and the author(s) is necessary. Contact information for the author(s) will be provided when the request is made. Requests must include the title, author, and anticipated publication date of the book; its price; and the projected print run. A reprint permission fee will be charged, part of which will go to the author(s) of the article. The fee in most cases will be $250 per article.
  • Requests to reprint articles in e-books. Electronic permission rights are not included when print rights are granted; a further request must be made by the publisher if electronic rights are sought. As with print permissions, the permission of both the Center, as copyright holder, and the author(s) is necessary. Contact information for the author(s) will be provided when the request is made. An additional  reprint permission fee will be charged, part of which will go to the author(s). The fee in all cases will be a further $300 per article.

For all permission requests in which a fee is involved, authors may ask for an additional fee from the publisher before granting their approval.

Authors who transfer copyright to The Hastings Center retain the right to reproduce and reprint their own work in any way they choose: in photocopy or PDF form, in books or collections for which they serve as author or editor, or on their own home page, Web site, or the Web site of their affiliated institution on the Internet. However, authors must acknowledge the Center’s copyright ownership. Please contact the editorial department for preferred language for copyright acknowledgment.
